PLEASE READ CAREFULLY!!!!!!!
Before you read any further, make sure you realize that a Yorkshire Terrier is a high maintenance dog! They require alot of time, attention and human interaction. Even my biggest puppies are small. The tiny Yorkies require extra attention and a very close eye on them at all times. I do not recommend that you purchase a Yorkshire Terrier, especially a tiny (teacup) if you are gone alot, have small children or if you do not plan on making him or her a part of your family. I beg you to read up on this breed! This is just a guide not a professional book!
Never feed a Yorkshire Terrier table scraps and any people food. We feed our babies Nutro Natural Choice Ultra and recommend you continue our food regimen. They have very sensitive digestive systems. They also have small throats and can choke. Be careful of the rawhide chew toys and any plastic chew toy that a small piece can be chewed off and get lodged in their tiny throats or lodged in their tummies.
Yorkshire Terrier's tend to have LOW BLOOD SUGAR. The tinier the Yorkie the longer this can occur. We have Nutri-Cal, Nutri-Stat and Kayro for our puppies for those emergencies. I try to send home with every new family one of these products. I also recommend that when you bring your new baby home that you give him/her a small dose at bed time and first thing in the morning for the first few days. Coming to a new home can be stressful on these little babies and they may be a little nervous and not eat as much or explore there new home and surroundings and play to long and hard. These are just a few instances that can happen and can cause the puppy's sugar level to drop. As always consult your Veterinarian for further usage if he/she feels it is necessary. Make sure they eat well before playing and monitor their play time to 15 minutes to start with. If they play too hard or too long this can reduce their energy and sugar level. If they seem sluggish, shake, act drunk and wobbly, give them a dime size dose of nutri-cal on their tongue and call your veterinarian immediatly. Kayro Syrup is something I also recommend you have in your kitchen for safe keeping. It will increase your puppies sugar level for those emergencies. Consult your veterinarian right away if this occurs also consult him/her for the proper dosage for your puppy's size.
When your puppy comes home to you, he/she is already familiar with the puppy training pads. We do not like to take them outside for potty training when they are so young because they have not been completely vaccinated, nor do we use newspaper for them to go on. You can continue this form of potty training and use the Puppy Training Pads. We also have convenient trays that holds the pee-pee pads in place and is much neater and cleaner. You can get these products at your local pet store or order online. We order from:
www.jefferspet.com
They have reasonably priced pet items for all your pet needs. You may want to contact them for a catalog.
Again, these are just my recommendations and suggestions for you. I encourage you to do plenty of research, discuss with your Veterinarian your desire to bring a Yorkie into your home and as a part of your family and use his/her guidance as well in your decision making.
Yorkies are wonderful, fun~loving and true blessings to add to your life. But you must be ready for the responsibility.
